Morally Superior Politician?

“I cannot accept the argument that a calm man who affirms the dismembering of babies in the womb has a superior character to a man who rants like Genghis Khan but acts to preserve that life. In my ideal world, I would vote for a candidate in whom the personal, the principled, and the practical earn my admiration. I do not live in that world. I live in this world, and I must act accordingly.”

What Are We Returning?

"As Christians, we can live on one of three levels. We can return evil for good, which is the satanic level. We can return good for good and evil for evil, which is the human level. Or, we can return good for evil, which is the divine level.”

Deliver Us While Still In Bed

I laughed out loud....

"We would like for God to deliver us while we are all still in bed. "

"Have you been reading your Bibles for so long and not yet learned that God loves to take His children to the brink? God takes the Israelites down to the edge of the water before He divides the sea. God takes Abraham to the point of an upraised sacrificial knife so that we might all learn to say on the mount of the Lord it will be provided. God takes the disciples to the point where their boat was foundering before Christ acted on their behalf.
We would like for God to deliver us while we are all still in bed. We would like to avoid the long trek to Moriah. We would like to meditate on what Christ could do if He wanted, and have our meditations take place while tied up to the dock. But that, alas for our comforts, is not the lesson that God in engaged in teaching us."

Biblical Solitude Is Not Solitude

"On several occasions we find Jesus retreating from the crowd simply to be alone. But the evidence suggests that he was doing more than simply seeking a little peace and quiet. Instead we find him withdrawing from the business of his ministry to be alone with God. This is the classic definition of solitude - not being alone, but withdrawing from the everyday stuff of life to be alone with the father."

- Dr Leslie Hardin. The Spirituality of Jesus Solitude, quiet

Conduit Of The Spirit

"..... we can think about prayer, along with the twentieth-century theologian Karl Barth, as a quest, a journey toward God to ask him for strength and courage to help us be obedient to his will. The Gospels portray Jesus in just this way. Granted, his "journey" toward the Father was not the same as ours, for he was
"the one who came from heaven": (John 3:13 ) and his communication with the Father was not about his seeking salvation but about keeping open the conduit of the Spirit."

- Leslie Hardin. The Spirituality of Jesus

Sometimes Silence!

Contrasting the KJV style and language prayers of his grandfather, with that of his early youth and camp workers views on prayer. The two extremes.

"As I matured, I realised that not everything in the depths of my heart and mind should be expressed in the presence of the the Almighty."

-  Leslie Hardin. The Spirituality of Jesus

Talked About - But Rarely Undertaken?

"Prayer often seems like a deep mystery.
Judging by the number of books that have appeared in Christian history on
the subject of prayer, it is apparently easier explained than practiced."

Civil World?

Jesus came to be King, inaugerating his own kingdom. He did not restore, revitalize, or redeem any earthly one.
Though his people infiltrate the earthly ones.
There is no earthly nation that will endure when he comes.
The earth will be purified by fire.
We can make the world more civil... but we cannot make it more eternal and eduring.

Written in 1988. James Sauer.

Traditional justice assumes a fallen, and permanently imperfect world where law is needed in order to encourage virtue and limit vice. For this reason, traditional justice relies on moral structures: family, civil force, church, constitution—in order to maintain just order. Since man is fallen, it recognizes that mere abstractions and ideals cannot govern man; but personal relationships, social duties, and civil authority, informed by Scripture and the Holy Spirit, must restrain his evil. Traditional justice is an unending process and is profoundly anti-Utopian. There will never be a point on this side of eternity when law will not be needed. The best world that the traditional justice view can create is a world where human beings are safe and free to conduct themselves together in an orderly fashion, pursuing their God-given gifts, and restraining their sinful tendencies. It is not a perfect world—it is a world with warts. But it is a world where one can be happy, productive, free, and content. Even if it is a world where one must inevitably suffer and die.
The social justice view is a new and radical view of the nature of justice. It is the common view of all left-of-center ideological positions. It is “end centered”—what Sobran, and others, call teleocratic. What matters in such a justice worldview is the end; the ideal, the vision of the future world. It is in this emerging world order where the social justice advocate sees true justice. Our task, he believes, is to bring about a new order of things. We are to judge all current systems by the end desired. Our duty is not to “revealed law” or even “natural” laws, but to revolutionary goals and to the vehicles that bring those goals about. The vehicles are usually a party, or a bureaucracy, or an army—but always statist. The old definitions of order and justice are made obsolete by the new vision: property rights give ground to “just

Justice?

When You Are The Police

"Antifa and BLM are not showing us their intention of abolishing the police. They are showing how they intend to behave when they are the police. "

- Douglas Wilson

Admirer, Or Follower?

"The admirer never makes any true sacrifices. He always plays it safe. Though in words, phrases, songs, he is inexhaustible about how highly he prizes Christ, he renounces nothing, will not reconstruct his life, and will not let his life express what it is he supposedly admires. Not so for the follower. No, no.

The follower aspires with all his strength to be what he admires. And then, remarkably enough, even though he is living amongst a “Christian people,” he incurs the same peril as he did when it was dangerous to openly confess Christ."

The biblical teaching on both destinations stands or falls together. When heaven and hell are spoken of in Scripture, each place is portrayed as being just as real and, in some passages anyway, as permanent as the other.

I Picked A Fight

There is no lack in these days of captious listeners and questioners; but to find a character desirous of information, and seeking the truth as a remedy for ignorance, is very difficult. Just as in the hunter's snare, or in the soldier's ambush, the trick is generally ingeniously concealed, so it is with the inquiries of the majority of the questioners who advance arguments, not so much with the view of getting any good out of them, as in order that, in the event of their failing to elicit answers which chime in with their own desires, they may seem to have fair ground for controversy."

Unchangeable, Yet Changing All Things

"What, then, are You, O my God— what, I ask, but the Lord God?
For who is Lord but the Lord?
Or who is God save our God?
Most high, most excellent,
most potent, most omnipotent;
most piteous and most just;
most hidden and most near;
most beauteous and most strong,
stable, yet contained of none;
unchangeable, yet changing all things;
never new, never old;
making all things new, yet bringing old age upon the proud and they know it not;
always working, yet ever at rest;
gathering, yet needing nothing;
sustaining, pervading, and protecting;
creating, nourishing, and developing;
seeking, and yet possessing all things.
You love, and burn not;
You are jealous, yet free from care;
You repent, and have no sorrow;
You are angry, yet serene;
You change Your ways, leaving unchanged Your plans;
You recover what You find, having yet never lost; ......"

Why Do I Ask God To Come To Me?

"And how shall I call upon my God— my God and my Lord? For when I call on Him I ask Him to come into me. And what place is there in me into which my God can come— into which God can come, even He who made heaven and earth? Is there anything in me, O Lord my God, that can contain You? Do indeed the very heaven and the earth, which You have made, and in which You have made me, contain You? Or, as nothing could exist without You, does whatever exists contain You? Why, then, do I ask You to come into me, since I indeed exist, and could not exist if You were not in me?"

Augustine. Confessions, Book 1

Can't Call Who We Never Heard Of

"Lord, teach me to know and understand which of these should be first, to call on You, or to praise You; and likewise to know You, or to call upon You. But who is there that calls upon You without knowing You? For he that knows You not may call upon You as other than You are. Or perhaps we call on You that we may know You. " But how shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? Or how shall they believe without a preacher? " [Romans 10:14]"

Liberalism and My Brother

Charles Spurgeon & The Downgrade Controversy 1887.
He amd his church withdraw from the British Baptist Union.

"but yet our solemn conviction is that things are much worse in many churches than they seem to be, and are rapidly tending downward."
Read those newspapers which represent the Broad School of Dissent, and ask yourself, How much farther could they go? What doctrine remains to be abandoned? What other truth to be the object of contempt? A new religion has been initiated, which is no more Christianity than chalk is cheese; and this religion, being destitute of moral honesty, palms itself off as the old faith with slight improvements, and on this plea usurps pulpits which were erected for gospel preaching. The Atonement is scouted, the inspiration of Scripture is derided, the Holy Spirit is degraded into an influence, the punishment of sin is turned into fiction, and the resurrection into a myth, and yet these enemies of our faith expect us to call them brethren, and maintain a confederacy with them!
The case is mournful. Certain ministers are making infidels. Avowed atheists are not a tenth as dangerous as those preachers who scatter doubt and stab at faith… Germany was made unbelieving by her preachers, and England is following in her tracks.

For decades the press had attacked Spurgeon, but now he would be savaged by his own Baptist Union. Prior to the Downgrade Controversy, if the Baptist Union had a papacy, Spurgeon would have been the unquestioned pope. But now, his erstwhile brethren brutalized him. They charged him with pugilism, and being a schismatic. They even questioned his sanity with a whisper campaign that his physical maladies had made him mad. Graduates of Spurgeon’s College turned on him, and the leaders of the Baptist Union pilloried him.

Three months later, in January 1888, the Baptist Union Council voted to accept his withdrawal, and then, the Council of nearly 100 members voted to censure Spurgeon, with only a meager five men supporting the Prince of Preachers.
The Baptist Union adopted a compromise doctrinal statement, which was altogether too weak, neither clear nor comprehensive enough. Though outside the Union, Spurgeon opposed the statement for its obvious deficiencies. Nonetheless, it passed overwhelmingly, by a vote of 2000–7, and can appropriately be interpreted as a second vote against Spurgeon. Most tragically, Spurgeon’s brother, James, seconded the motion to pass the compromise doctrinal statement.

keep The Faith.

As Christians, we are called to share our faith, but we are also called to keep it. Like the Apostle Paul, every believer should aspire to the epitaph, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.”

Give Grace To The Graceless?

"So I’m going to ask you to do something really, really hard. Maybe the hardest thing anyone can do.

I’m asking you to extend grace to people who didn’t extend grace to you. To show grace to the graceless. That doesn’t mean you pretend nothing ever happened. Grace doesn’t rewrite the past; it offers the future the chance to be free from it. It doesn’t mean you don’t confront those who wronged you. Grace doesn’t conflict with truth; it offers healing for what truth reveals. And it doesn’t mean you are right about everything and they are wrong. Grace knows that two people can experience the same event in different ways."

How Loving Solves Social Justice

Transforming the social world - Dallas Willard

"That’s the secret of Jesus. You watch Jesus, and you see he never did “withdraw” and then “attack.” All of the time people wanted him to do it and in many ways, but he would not. Then to the body of believers he said, “This will show everyone that you are my disciples, if you love one another,” but he had already said, “Love one another as I have loved you.” So that’s the model. In that sense the transformation of the social world is at its heart the transformation of personal relations. That’s the key to transforming society in the larger arena. There is no cure for the social battles that we fight in our culture—and there’s so much grief around race, gender, and so forth—until you eliminate “withdrawal” and “attack” and replace them with “acceptance” and “help.” Once you do that and not just talk about it, these other issues will fall into place quickly. They will not fall into place at all unless it is done this way."

Two Opposite Stories Cain't win!

"As a doctor working in a slum area with many immigrant residents, I see multiculturalism from the ground up, rather than from the theory down. And it is clear from what I see almost every day that not all cultural values are compatible or can be reconciled by the enunciation of platitudes. The idea that we can all rub along together, without the law having to discriminate in favour of one set of cultural values rather than another, is worse than merely false: it makes no sense whatever."

The Diabolical Self

"The sins of the flesh are bad, but they are the least bad of all sins. All the worst pleasures are purely spiritual: the pleasure of putting other people in the wrong, of bossing and patronizing and spoiling sport, and back-biting, the pleasures of power, of hatred. For there are two things inside me, competing with the human self which I must try to become. They are the Animal self, and the Diabolical self. The Diabolical self is the worse of the two. That is why a cold, self-righteous prig who goes regularly to church may be far nearer to hell than a prostitute. But, of course, it is better to be neither." ~ C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

Conformity

But it is not "inequity" and "unfairness" that are at the root of socialist Envy, it is a desire to stamp out diversity, to enforce uniformity....

In "Facial Justice" the British fiction writer L.P. Hartley wrote of an imaginary Utopia where envy is institutionalized by a government program that make sure all female faces are equal, performing coerced surgery to detract from the more beautiful and uplifting less unattractive until "facial Justice" is finally realized .....
Kyrt Vonnegyt Jr. wrote the short story "Harrison Bergerob" depecting a comprehensively egalitarian utopia:
" the year was 2081, and everyone was finally equal. They weren't only equal before God in the law. They were equal in every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anyone else."

The Handicappingh worked as follows: Hazel had a perfectly average intelligence, which meant she couldn't think about anything except in short bursts.
And George, while his intelligence was way above normal, had a little mental handicap radio in his ear. He was required by law to wear it at all times. It was tuned to a government transmitter. Every 20 seconds or so, the transmitter would send out some sharp noise to keep people like George from taking on a fair advantage of their brains."

Loving Beyond The World Of Deception

"In the badlands, I had been incrementally realizing that there is far more to this Christian life than getting it right. There is living it right. Learning the truth of God, the gospel, the scriptures involves understanding words, concepts, history. But living it means working through a world of deception, of doubt and suffering, a world of rejections and betrayal and idolatry."
